Land & Spirit, 2024
Starace’s abstract works deconstruct and reimagine the concept of form, blending layers of oil and acrylic into dynamic compositions. Expanses of color, richly textured surfaces, and sweeping gestures embody the energy and movement of human expression without direct representation. The works invite viewers to explore themes of vitality, spirit, and transformation, suggesting an emotional landscape where structure and fluidity coexist within the intangible forces that shape self-identity.
Drawing inspiration from the fusion of the Australian landscape and the artist’s Italian homeland, these abstract landscapes merge the colors and warmth of both regions. A recent trip to Rome rekindled connections to cherished childhood memories and a deeper understanding of self through the coastline, hills, and timeless beauty of the land. Influenced by the principles of Zen, the paintings evoke balance, timelessness, and interconnectedness, encouraging introspection and a profound appreciation for life.
Starace’s creative process begins intuitively, using pastels, charcoal, and other mediums that resonate in the moment. Layer by layer, the compositions develop depth in color and meaning. The process is experimental and instinctive, allowing colors to flow freely while embracing unpredictability. The palette shifts from subtle to intense, with the artist’s signature “line” weaving throughout—a reflection of connection to land, family, people, the divine, and self.
In memory of my loving Father, who always supported me and believed in my art and my extroverted creativity…love you always. - Gaia
“I love playing with different materials and experimenting with new techniques, forms, compositions...I like to push the mediums to see how far they can go, reinventing, re-creating...reshaping.”
“Journeying through my memories in search of inspiration, nature is always on my side...my land, my ancestors, the people I love...happy moments, laughter, playfulness...nothing to do, just being me...”
